Why Does Sin Rule Us?

The late singer Frank Sinatra made famous the anthem, “I did it MY way!”

And honestly, that one sentence captures the struggle of humanity.

From the very beginning, mankind has wrestled with one question: Will we do things God’s way…or our own way?

Too often, we choose our way.

“But no, my people wouldn’t listen. Israel did not want me around. So I let them follow their own stubborn desires, living according to their own ideas. Oh, that my people would listen to me! Oh, that Israel would follow me, walking in my paths!” Psalms 81:11-13 NLT

That scripture is both heartbreaking and revealing. God doesn’t force Himself on people. He gives us the freedom to choose. And many times, humanity chooses independence from God instead of intimacy with Him.

One scholar once said, “Democracy has worked in America for 250 years partly because people had what we call the ‘fear of God.’ But if we lose it, we can never hire enough police to rule us.”

That statement carries weight.

Why? Because laws alone cannot change the human heart. Rules may restrain behavior for a season, but only God can transform a soul.

Since God IS love, He had to give humanity a choice between good and evil. Forced love is not love at all. And even after God demonstrated His unbelievable love by sending Jesus to die on a cross for our sins, people still resist Him and cling to self-rule.

That is why the world feels so broken.

We see violence, division, pride, addiction, greed, confusion, and hopelessness everywhere. Deep down, people know something is wrong. But many still reject the very One who can heal what is broken.

Sin tells us, “Be your own god.”

Jesus says, “Follow Me and live.”

And yet God remains patient.

Instead of immediately pouring out judgment, He continues extending mercy. He sends believers filled with compassion, truth, and courage to share the hope of Christ with the world.

People like YOU.

This is our mission in a hurting culture:

Love people.

Hate sin.

Lift up Jesus.

When we boldly share God’s love, two powerful things happen. First, the message of salvation reaches people who may never step foot inside a church. Second, our own faith grows stronger as we obey God and become active disciples instead of passive spectators.

That is how cultures change.

That is how hearts heal.

That is how darkness loses ground.

One life at a time.

One conversation at a time.

One surrendered heart at a time.

And that is a victory worth celebrating!
