Why Doubt

It’s our favorite question to God: “Why?

So why do we doubt Jesus? We are all guilty of it. After Peter walked on the water, Jesus asked Peter “why did you doubt Me?” And we should also give an answer.

“But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” Matthew 14:30-31 NLT

He probably asks us a similar question as to why we are prideful, why do we lust, or why are we greedy? Why does the pig return to the pigpen after being washed?

Do you still occasionally doubt? I do. Sometimes God speaks to me about another step of faith, and I say, “God, are you kidding me?” Sometimes I’m not full of faith when I pray. No matter how old we are, our sinful nature continues to wrestle with us. The devil hates God, so therefore hates us, and will do whatever he can to tempt us to question God or to walk away from our belief.

We are caught in sort of a hyper time-warp. Part of our mind is set on heavenly things above, and part is still tempted by the unbelief of this world. We are forgiven and righteous before God, yet we are still vulnerable to sin and unbelief. We’re seated in the heavenlies, yet still walk on earth. We’re like the man who was praying for deliverance for his demon-possessed son as he declared: “Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief!”

Let’s face it, only by God’s grace do we stand!

But as Peter was actually walking on the water, Peter got his eyes off Jesus and onto the huge waves which were splashing on his feet. And therein lies our problem.

Our eyes must be laser-focused on Jesus and His protection, provision and presence! Yes we will still be tempted to lose focus, but we must be ready to eliminate any and all threats to our belief.

We must defeat every temptation by remembering

and declaring the faithfulness of our God!

Abraham believed God! “He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,” Romans 4:20 NKJV

James appealed to our faith. “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.” James 1:6 NKJV

Jesus quoted God’s word back to the devil: “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’” Matt 4:10 NKJV

Our battle is real, but our Savior never leaves us alone, equipping us to win!
