Storms are not exactly ideal sleeping conditions. Lightning. Thunder. Waves crashing over the bow. Especially terrifying in a small boat in the dead of night.

But this was Jesus’ idea. He personally invited the disciples to climb in and cross to the other side of the lake. Several smaller boats followed His lead, none of them knowing what was waiting for them out on the water.

He was leading them straight into a terrifying storm.

These seasoned fishermen — men who had spent their lives on that lake — were now white-knuckled and screaming in fear. But not Jesus. He was in the back of the boat, his head on a cushion, sound asleep.

“But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, ‘Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?’” Mark 4:37-38 NLT

Jesus was teaching them one of the most important lessons of their lives: We are always secure in the love of God.

We can always trust Him. And yes — when the hard storms of life roll in, we too can find rest in the middle of them. Not because the storm isn’t real, but because we know the One who holds it all.

How is that possible? When we truly believe our Father knows everything — past, present, and future — we realize we don’t have to be in control. We can release our grip. God has a remarkable way of working all things together for good when we simply trust Him. Even storms.

And it goes even further than that. We can speak peace to our storms. We can face every difficulty, every hardship, every season of uncertainty with courage — because we are never alone. Our faith should remind us Jesus is always in the boat with us.

So let’s wave goodbye to fear, worry, and doubt. Let’s stop white-knuckling the wheel and start trusting the One who commands the wind and the waves.

The storm doesn’t have the final word. He does. And He’s right there with you — perfectly at peace.
