Lessons from the course

For me, golf is a love-hate relationship. I love playing on beautiful, well-manicured lawns, surrounded by God’s creation. Few things are as refreshing as spending hours in nature. Yet I hate that I keep repeating the same mistakes in my game.

Watching the annual Master’s Golf Tournament at Augusta reminded me of this tension. The course is closed for six months before the event to prepare it to perfection. As I watched, two truths hit me: I need more golf lessons, and Christians can learn powerful life lessons from professional golfers.

Lessons from the Course

1. Stay focused. Don’t listen to the crowd—think only of the present moment.

2. Control emotions. Whether you hit well or poorly, stay steady. No self-pity allowed.

3. Believe in yourself. Trust your training, your God-given ability, and His strength.

4. Stay vigilant. Even “easy shots” require attention.

5. Learn from mistakes. Listen to wise counsel—like a golfer listens to their caddie.

6. Take one hole at a time. Don’t look back or worry about tomorrow.

7. Redefine winning. Victory is doing your best.

8. Dream big. Surround yourself with people who respect you, and enjoy the journey.

The Greater Lesson

Life, like golf, requires discipline, focus, and humility. Mistakes are inevitable, but they become opportunities to grow when we let God teach us. When He leads our lives, we are always winners—not because of perfect performance, but because His grace shapes us into champions for His glory.
